About

Ian Moubayed

Ian Moubayed is a New York based filmmaker who started his career as a cinematographer, collaborating with Emmy, Peabody, and Oscar-winning filmmakers to create engaging and impactful work. His work as Director of Photography on Netflix’s The Great Hack exposed the dark world of data exploitation by following the personal narratives of key players entangled in the explosive Cambridge Analytica/Facebook scandal. The film received a BAFTA nomination and landed on the 2019 Oscar shortlist.

In 2021, Moubayed served as the Director of Photography on NBC Peacock’s The Sit In: Harry Belafonte Hosts the Tonight Show, which was nominated for Emmy and Peabody Awards. That same year he was personally nominated for a Cinema Eye Honor for his work as a series cinematographer on HBO’s The Vow.

Over the past five years Moubayed has transitioned to directing more short-form documentaries for companies, brands, and foundations, all while focusing on original work. He collaborated with Talking Heads frontman David Byrne to direct a documentary for his experimental performance project, Theater of the Mind. His acclaimed short documentary Keys to the City was featured in The New Yorker and nominated for Best Short Documentary by the Critics Choice Awards, and recently his cinematography for the documentary short I Am Ready, Warden was nominated for a 2025 Academy Award.
